THIRST, Solo performance, 30 minutes
Thirst started with a series of walks, collecting the few reliques found scattered around the island. They silently scream on the limestone in revolt towards the continuing development. As the rock is constructed, the memories are deconstructed.
It is story told with my hands, body, heart and lungs.
It is about the piece of land I shall carry.
She sat still for a long time until hands started to devour her into pieces in
desperate hunger. Her cries were swallowed by the dark shadow.
So I pour my heart into her until they merge
and my heart becomes the rock
and the rock owns a heart.
The 30 minute performance intimates the invisible and using the body as a place of carrying memory, it explores the thirst for the feeling of home.
Thirst evolved to become an inspiring collaborative dialogue with visual artist Letta Shtohryn, a beast, shepherd Rosalyn Maynard, a goddess of the rock and Yasmin Kuymizakis’ sound waves.
Rebecca was awarded the Professional Development Grant by Arts Council Malta to devise the piece in a residency in Dartington through the Solo Lab Mentoring Programme led by Rosalyn Maynard. Maynard is founder of The School of Experiential Learning,UK. This consisted of an intensive laboratory mentoring programme researching somatics for performance making.
